Sports instead of medication?
Researchers from Britain and the United States have found that physical activity reduces the risk of death in patients suffering from a heart attack or stroke, same as with medication. New research published in the medical journal BMJ.
Researchers from the London School of Economics, Stanford Medical School and Harvard University analyzed findings from -305 randomized studies involving 339 274 patients. Studies have shown no significant statistical difference between the exercise and drug treatment, in reducing mortality in people suffering from cardiovascular or those suffering from pre-diabetes.
In stroke patients, the researchers found that exercise is more effective than medication in reducing stroke:
The researchers said that further studies are needed to confirm the findings, but it seems that exercise is an important feature of longevity, even more than drugs. In addition the researchers recommend physicians to consider recommending medication alongside the physical activity that suits them.
According to the World Health Organization Physical inactivity the fourth reason that causes mortality and is estimated to 3.2 million deaths worldwide each year.
In Israel are treated in hospitals each year about 10 thousand patients suffering from a heart attack. Among those, the mortality rate ranges from 5% to 7% mortality rate among the lowest in the world. The problem is that approximately 3,000 additional patients avoid from coming to the hospital for examination even though they suffer from early signs of heart attack and die at home.
An estimated one to 35 minutes in Israel occurs a stroke. In total there are approximately 15 thousand patients each year, of which about 3,000 people out of them will die.
